#28: Electronic listening music
New music from Bill Converse & Patricia, Mary Jane Dunphe, Bianca Scout, and more
This week’s new music:
Spotify
Apple Music
Bill Converse & Patricia, “Fixer”
I’ve been listening to a lot of early ’90s Warp lately, specifically the Artificial Intelligence series, and this feels very at home with that specific vintage of “electronic listening music.” / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Mary Jane Dunphe, “Uriel”
The drum track got in my head the first time I heard it, and still hasn’t left. This is the third track I’ve posted from Scenic Route’s Road Less Travelled Vol. 2 compilation, which tells me there’s a lot more gold to be found in that album, and it’s time I start digging. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Bianca Scout, “The Last Guardian”
The mix on this is so mesmerizing, the way the field recordings blend with the recorded music, weaving, then intertwining, until they become very nearly the same thing. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Bad Snacks, “like u do - rework” (feat. chromonicci, Omari Jazz) / Contour, “Theresa”
Still obsessing over the new Black Decelerant, this new pair of songs from Omari Jazz and Contour are scratching the itch until they (hopefully) team up again.
“like u do - rework” / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp
“Theresa” / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Throbbing Gristle, “The Third Mind: First Movement”
Recorded in 2007 and now reissued, this sounds as fresh as anything else that might come out in the year 2024. Music ahead of its time, certainly—a phrase frequently associated with Throbbing Gristle, and for good reason. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
the IV, “Same old story”
Post-punk Stereolab without a Farfisa is the description that keeps swirling around my mind about this, my favorite song from the week. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Godspeed You! Black Emperor, “GREY RUBBLE – GREEN SHOOTS”
My love for this band is unending. I did see them once, in 1999, when during one of their longer—as in, upwards of 20 minutes—songs, one of the guitarists broke a string. All the while, the band continued with their roaring cacophony as he set his instrument down, retrieved a new string, sat on the stage, slowly hand-rolled a cigarette, lit it, replaced the string, retuned his guitar, finished his cigarette, then rejoined the band. Though it was all so loud and overwhelming you couldn’t tell he’d stopped playing in the first place, or had even returned. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Being Dead, “Nightvision”
I included this band last week, and while I try not to fall prey to streaming release strategies, this song is just far too perfect to pass up. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Wut, “Mingling With the Thorns”
Pleasantly complex, classic lo-fi indie pop. Don’t overthink it. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Herald, “Baz & Edge”
Love the longform narrative vocal line on this song. Like Brian Eno singing with Animal Collective. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
Tindersticks, “Always a Stranger”
That voice, yes, but also that circular melody. I am convinced that anything is possible with a song that employs a circular melody. It swirls, it ebbs, it grows, and whatever else enters its pull—including the listener—becomes all the more emphatic and charged with energy. / Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp, YouTube
